GRC recycles cell phones through “Reuse” and “Refining” programs. Here’s how it works:
1. REUSE: How we recycle working phones with resale value.
Approximately 60% of recycled cell phones have resale value as refurbished cell phones. Through our Reuse program, GRC distributes cell phones to wireless markets worldwide in need of affordable communication. The reuse of used electronics is applauded by many environmentalists as an essential step in the electronics recycling process.
2. REFINING: How we recycle non-reusable cell phones.
Approximately 40% of recycled cell phones do not have resale value, and are processed through our environmentally responsible “Refining” program. Through the Refining program, phones are shredded and smelted at our copper refiner, and various metals are “reclaimed” back to their natural state. This process, often referred to as “above ground mining”, is applauded by many environmentalists as an essential step in the replenishment of our natural resources.
GRC has established a socially responsible, zero landfill environmental policy. Our environmental policies are consistent with the policies outlined by the EPA's Guidelines for Materials Management and the Basel Action Network. Our policies are highlighted by the following:
ZERO LANDFILL FOR E-WASTE: No wireless e-waste (non-working handsets, boards, batteries, and accessories) will be sent to solid waste landfills.
NO E-WASTE SENT TO DEVELOPING COUNTRIES: No wireless e-waste (non-working handsets, boards, batteries, and accessories) will be processed in developing countries. GRC will make every conceivable effort to ensure that all downstream smelting and refining operations meet all applicable environmental regulations.
RECHARGEABLE BATTERY RECYCLING: Batteries are processed according to EPA guidelines for the proper disposal and recycling of rechargeable batteries.
CARDBOARD RECYCLING: No cardboard boxes (e.g. shipping boxes) are processed in landfills. All cardboard is responsibly recycled.
